Beaumont Health System's Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Center offers professional education leading to eligibility for board certification and employment in chaplaincy and is fully accredited with commendation through the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), Inc., of Decatur, Georgia, and the U.S. Department of Education.
Through supervised delivery of emotional and spiritual care, students (lay persons and clergy of various faiths and cultures) learn new pastoral skills to help persons in crisis and situations of pastoral need. By intense involvement with persons in these types of situations and the feedback from peers and teachers, participants develop new awareness of themselves as individuals and of the needs of those to whom they minister. From theological reflection on specific human situations, our interns and residents gain a new understanding of ministry and develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships through an interdisciplinary team approach of helping persons in a care-giving alliance.
By concept and design, Clinical Pastoral Education at Beaumont offers a variety of configurations and environments in which the complex dimensions of diversity (e.g. of spirituality, of learning styles, of vocational formation, of culture) are valued, affirmed, and honored.
The Clinical Pastoral Education programs offer units of CPE credit ranging from ten weeks to one year through summer, extended and residency programs. Each program consists of a total time commitment of approximately 480 - 500 hours spent in clinical practicums, group-centered learning activities, and one-to-one direct supervision. Each participant also has the opportunity and responsibility for periods of overnight and holiday clinical practicums, and shared or full leadership of weekly religious services.
All Beaumont CPE programs are conducted by an ACPE certified supervisor with an interdisciplinary faculty chosen from a wide range of Beaumont professionals.
